What does Speed Conversion mean?

Speed conversion translates a velocity measurement from one unit to another. Different countries and industries use different speed units — kilometers per hour for road travel in most of the world, miles per hour in the US and UK, meters per second in physics, and knots in aviation and maritime navigation. Converting between them is essential for travel planning, engineering, and scientific work. You will also see the same units written informally: kph and kmh both mean km/h, and ms is a common shorthand for m/s, so a search for “kph to ms” is the same conversion as km/h to m/s.

How to calculate Speed Conversion

All speed conversions work through a common base unit — meters per second (m/s). First convert the input to m/s, then from m/s to the target unit. The base factors are 1 km/h = 0.2778 m/s, 1 mph = 0.4470 m/s, 1 knot = 0.5144 m/s and 1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s. The four pairs below cover most everyday conversions, and each has a single shortcut factor you can apply directly.

km/h to m/s

Divide by 3.6, because 1 km/h = 1000 m ÷ 3600 s = 0.2778 m/s. Example: 100 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 27.78 m/s. This is the same conversion people write as “kph to ms”.

mph to km/h

Multiply by 1.609344, the number of kilometers in a mile. Example: 60 mph × 1.609344 = 96.56 km/h. To go back the other way, divide by 1.609344 — 100 km/h ÷ 1.609344 = 62.14 mph.

m/s to km/h

Multiply by 3.6 — the exact inverse of the km/h to m/s step. Example: 10 m/s × 3.6 = 36 km/h, and the speed of sound at 343 m/s × 3.6 = 1,234.8 km/h.

knots to km/h

Multiply by 1.852, since one knot is one nautical mile (1,852 m) per hour. Example: 20 knots × 1.852 = 37.04 km/h. For knots to m/s, multiply by 0.5144 instead: 20 knots × 0.5144 = 10.29 m/s.

Divide the km/h value by 3.6, or equivalently multiply by 0.2778. For example, 100 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 27.78 m/s and 50 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 13.89 m/s. The factor comes from 1 km/h being 1,000 meters spread over 3,600 seconds. To reverse it, multiply m/s by 3.6.

Multiply the mph value by 1.609344, the exact number of kilometers in a mile. For example, 60 mph × 1.609344 = 96.56 km/h and 70 mph × 1.609344 = 112.65 km/h. For a rough mental estimate, add 60% — 60 mph is a little under 100 km/h. To convert km/h back to mph, divide by 1.609344.

A knot is one nautical mile per hour, which equals 1.852 km/h or 0.5144 m/s. Nautical miles are based on the geometry of the Earth — one nautical mile equals one minute of latitude. This makes navigation calculations much simpler when working with charts and coordinates.

At sea level and 20 °C, the speed of sound is approximately 343 m/s, 1,235 km/h, 767 mph, or 667 knots. This is often referred to as Mach 1.

A quick mental approximation: divide km/h by 1.6. For example, 100 km/h ÷ 1.6 ≈ 62.5 mph. The exact factor is 1.609344, which gives 62.14 mph, so the shortcut is a very close estimate.
